A client of mine told me something recently, that was hard for him to admit.
“I don’t think it’s as simple as me looking for my next job — I think I’m facing a career crisis, and I’m finding it really confronting!”
Honestly, I understood what he meant.
I’ve been there myself, and I’ve coached hundreds of others in a similar boat.
If those words hit home with you, know that it’s okay.
Not only is it perfectly normal to arrive at a moment in your career where you feel like you’ve reached a crisis point, but…
… it can actually be a good thing!
A crisis point is a difficult or dangerous time, but it’s also a time when a solution is needed.
Knowing you’ve hit a crisis point forces you to find that solution — a solution you might have been putting off trying to find for weeks, months, or even YEARS.
Because once you’re in crisis mode, you don’t have a choice.
You need to find a solution, otherwise, the crisis will get worse.
Take the client I mentioned above.
He’d recently been headhunted by a company that he’d worked for a few years previously.
And of course, when you get headhunted, it’s flattering!
So he didn’t ask too many questions throughout the process — after all, he’d worked at this company before — and it was only once he’d accepted a new job there that he thought:
Shit, I’m not sure if this is what I *actually* want.
Once he’d settled back in, he remembered what a big beast of a corporate company it was, with few opportunities for moving up.
And because he was about to hit forty, expecting his second baby, locked into over an hour’s commute to work each day, and not enjoying the role that he’d just committed himself to, he felt LOST.
Whereas what he wanted was to fly through his forties, doing something he actually loved.
Luckily, he decided to address the situation head-on.
(Apparently, his wife was sick of hearing him complain about work, so that might have been a motivator too!) 😉
After working with me for 4 sessions, he’d decided to take his career in a different direction, and had come up with a clear vision of what exactly he wanted, with short- and long-term goals and a step-by-step action plan to move forward with. By session 6, his plan was working, his revised LinkedIn profile was making an impact, his network was expanding, and new work opportunities were appearing, as he had conversations with more and more of the right people.
Now, after completing the full 12-week program, he’s successfully building up his own consultancy business on the side of his full-time job, and has landed his first paying client!
Not to mention that over the course of our time working together, I saw a person who’d got caught up and lost in the corporate chaos come back into himself and start to shine.
And you should know that what’s possible for him is 100% possible for you too.
So if you’re feeling stuck in your current role or worried that you might be on your way to a career crisis, stop for a moment and ask yourself a couple of questions.

Personally, I know that when I first started working with a coach and he asked me about my values and purpose, I had no idea how to reply to him!!
But it’s worth it to get the ball rolling.
Because it was when I finally stopped and took stock of these things, that I realized I’d grown into a very different person from the one who’d first embarked on the career path I was heading down!
