Ladies, let’s step up and lead!

IWD 2021: This year’s motto is #ChooseToChallenge — and there’s no better time than the present to take action and make your voice heard.

International Women’s Day is here again and the world has had quite a shake-up since the last one! The theme is fitting for this new world we find ourselves navigating, with a focus on Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 World.

Firstly, I want to virtually high-five all the ladies who have been the unsung leaders at home over the last 12 months. The women who had to put their careers on hold for whatever reason, while taking on the unpaid (and often unappreciated) role of homeschool teacher, mum, chef, cleaner, and much, much more. I see you!

And let’s go ahead and put “AN EQUAL FUTURE” in big, bold capital letters. I think we need to seriously acknowledge that when we talk about this during IWD, it’s not just about the inequality in pay and power — though...

What to do when you're facing a career crisis!

A client of mine told me something recently, that was hard for him to admit.

“I don’t think it’s as simple as me looking for my next job — I think I’m facing a career crisis, and I’m finding it really confronting!”

Honestly, I understood what he meant.

I’ve been there myself, and I’ve coached hundreds of others in a similar boat.

If those words hit home with you, know that it’s okay.

Not only is it perfectly normal to arrive at a moment in your career where you feel like you’ve reached a crisis point, but…

… it can actually be a good thing!

A crisis point is a difficult or dangerous time, but it’s also a time when a solution is needed.

Knowing you’ve hit a crisis point forces you to find that solution — a solution you might have been putting off trying to find for weeks, months, or even YEARS.

Because once you’re in crisis mode, you don’t have a choice.

How to turn your career dreams into reality.

Do you have a dream?

Of course you do. We all dream — it’s part of the human condition. But for some reason, when it comes to our careers, many of us think we don’t have it in us to turn our dreams into reality.

I see it all the time with my clients, and I get it. Because I was once in the same place.

For over a decade of my working life, I believed my dream career was out of reach. Sometimes, I allowed myself to think — and daydream! — about it, and I’d let my thoughts run away from me for a while. But then my logical brain would kick in, and I’d push the thoughts and dreams away and return to the humdrum of daily life. I’d tell myself: Don’t be so bloody stupid! Dreams like that don’t come true — or at least they can’t come true for me.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing, isn’t it? The truth was: I had no idea how to make my dream happen, so I just tried to get on with my life. And the problem was: I had a...

3 simple steps to making your wild career dreams come true!

Right now, I’m in the middle of relocating from the mountains of Italy to Sardinia for the summer.

Every year, my little family makes the seachange so we can soak up the sunshine after a long, snowy winter.

The ability to do this was my partner’s longtime dream — and needless to say, I was happy to go along with it!

While I was getting ready for the move, I started thinking about dreaming and how it’s part of the human condition.

It’s what motivates us and drives us towards what we want in the future.

And we have the power to turn our dreams into reality. We really do!

Just the other day, I had an interesting chat with a young girl who is also heading to Sardinia to work in a local restaurant.

Last year, she holidayed there and fell in love with it (but not with the guy she’d gone there to see!). After her two-week stay, she was really sad to leave.

She told herself: “I want to go back and live in Sardinia...

Have I become conditioned to lockdown life?

Five weeks in, and lockdown life is officially the new normal for me — and millions of people around Italy and the world. I’ve not only accepted it, but I’ve become conditioned to this weird way of living.

Just the other day, I said to my partner: “Oh, I could do with a few more weeks of full-on lockdown because I finally have the time to go through my to-do list.”

For those of you who don’t know, I spend most of winter living in a tiny little village perched on the Northern Italian mountain of Alpe di Mera.  When I say it’s remote, I mean it (check out the pic above). When the snow hits, the only way in or out is via a snowmobile or chairlift!

My family escaped to the mountain when my daughter’s childcare center closed seven weeks ago. We haven’t left since, and the biggest thing I’m feeling is gratitude.

I’m very lucky to be quarantined here. We have lots of space, and since it’s so remote, we can...

Moving forward with your job search and career during the coronavirus.

The coronavirus is spreading across the world — and so is a sense of uncertainty. Living in Italy, I’ve definitely felt that over the past few weeks, but I’m trying to stay positive knowing that if we all do our bit now, this whole thing will pass so much sooner.

But what does the pandemic mean for your career?

If you were job hunting or preparing for a career move or change before the outbreak, you might be wondering if you should continue or put it on hold for now.

Here’s what I know: In uncertain times, companies are more hesitant to hire and the market is likely going to slow down, no matter what industry you’re in. But you shouldn’t pause your career dreams and goals.

While this pandemic may be unprecedented, the world has gone through market slowdowns before. And what happens? We bounce back — often bigger and stronger than before.

So, let’s look at this downtime as an opportunity to get really clear on what you want, and put...

Some people love January — they think it’s a time to refresh and reset. Some people like June, when the first signs of summer start to show and everything feels easy and breezy again.

For me, it’s February.

It’s always been a fabulous month for me, and the month where new things happen.

As a career coach, I know I probably should say January is my favourite month. I’ve written blogs about how January is a great time to assess your situation, review your goals, and kick-start the year in a positive way. But if you’re familiar with my work, you’ll know that I’m also very firm about one thing: If you don’t get to something in January, that’s no reason to give up.

That’s why I look at January as a warm up, and February as the time to truly make things happen.

And on a personal note, February has been something of a lucky month for me.

The February that changed my career — and life

You might be wondering what...

It’s a new year, and many people are inspired to make a fresh start or shake things up a little. It’s also a time when we look at our careers and think about the changes we’d like to make and the milestones we want to achieve. You might be hoping to switch jobs, go for that promotion or pay rise, or even do a complete career 180.

I see this every year, and I’ve also noticed the one thing that holds people back from turning these grand ideas into a reality and moving forward in their career. And that’s confidence.

A lack of confidence in ourselves, our abilities and our work can prevent us from building the career we deserve!

It can stop us from asking for a raise, applying for that promotion or pursuing new and exciting career opportunities. Why? Because we don’t believe we can do it.

But here’s the thing: It’s up to you to create the career you want. It’s up to you to change your situation if you’re not entirely happy. No...

A big welcome to 2020! It’s not only a new year but a new decade — and no doubt you have some thoughts swirling around your mind about the future.

Here are my questions for you:

Do you want this to be the year that everything changes?

Do you want this to be the year where you start to progress towards the career of your dreams?

Do you want this to be the year where you hit those goals you can’t stop thinking about?

Do you want this to be your best year yet?

Of course you do! Who doesn’t?

If you’ve had the same goals and dreams in mind for a few years — but haven’t yet achieved them — you’re not alone.

Time is a funny thing. One minute it’s January, the next it's July, and then before you know it, it’s December and nothing has changed.

Guess what? It’s time to shake up the status quo.

There’s a way to get closer to achieving those ambitious, game-changing goals you set for yourself.

There’s a way to...

When I first started working all I wanted was to be successful.

The only problem was, I didn’t know what that looked or felt like.

Well, I knew what successful people looked like, but they tended to be movie stars.

They made success look bloody good.

I daydreamed glitzy images: smart suits for the guys, glamour and sophistication for the gals, trendy city offices, nice cars, fancy houses, always a good-looking other half, cocktails in chic bars.

That’s happiness, right?

Actually, I hadn’t thought much about how happiness figured in all of this.

In my mind, if I worked hard, there was no question that I’d be successful. I just needed to get a job, put my head down and get on with it. If I did well, I’d keep getting promoted and climb up the ladder till I’d made it.

And that’s where the glamour and sophistication would kick in and the handsome guy would appear at my side. Boom, I’d have nailed it!

Maybe I’d watched too many movies,...
